North Country-The Making of Minnesota
Dr.Mary Wingerd, History Professor at St. Cloud State, will be in Owatonna at Roosevelt School on Thursday evening, Oct 7th, at 6:30PM. Ms. Wingerd will discuss her recently released book, “North Country: The Making of Minnesota” . The book, commissioned by the University of Minnesota, unlocks the complex origins of our state that have often been buried in favor of legend and a more familiar image of immigration, settlement, and cultural exchange. Professor Wingerd will share that “the biggest myth in our state’s history is that Indians in Minnesota country were hostile to whites when in fact there were almost no incidents of Indian attacks on white people, Europeans or Americans. The Dakota and Ojibwe went to great lengths not to drive traders away”. Professor Wingerd will read from North Country and present a slideshow of some of the book's telling images.
