Snow Day and other Childhood Memories- an evening with author Peg Meier

In Minnesota, youthful memories may be arranged seasonally: making snow angels in January, swatting mosquitoes in July. They may be tinged with a nostalgic glow or imprinted by lessons hard won.Beloved pets. Holiday rituals. Schoolyard antics. Teenage perspectives on a world at war. Childhood is a mixed bag of challenges and joys wherever one grows up.

Author Peg Meier will share stories from her newest book where she explores the themes of childhood—the bitter and the sweet. Thanks to Minnesotans who took the time to write, whether as children in the moment or as adults looking back, Peg Meier has unearthed a wealth of material on the subject, ranging from diary entries to reminiscences to newspaper columns, along with plenty of photographs. Consider registering for this interesting evening as Peg shares some of her favorite stories from this new book. One of the stories she will touch on will be about Coco Irvine, a child from a wealthy family of St. Paul’s Summit Avenue neighborhood back in 1920's.

When Coco Irvine was 13 years old in 1927, she kept a charming diary.Coco's father owned lumber companies, and the Irvines were among the Midwest's wealthiest families. As adults, Coco and her sister donated their late parents' home to the state of Minnesota. It's now the Governor's Residence. Meier rediscovered the hilarious diary in the Minnesota Historical Society archives and wrote a foreword and surprising aftermath. The diary was published by the University of Minnesota Press and will be followed by a play at the History Theatre in St. Paul, March 3-25, 2012.

Pre-registration deadline is February 10th. Ms Meier will conclude her talk with  audience questions and a book signing.
